The Crystal Park police are encouraging residents to remain vigilant to reduce the risk of falling victim to crime.
This comes after a housebreaking incident at a complex in Crystal Park on October 28.
Crystal Parks SAPS spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mopeli said the homeowner was awoken by the sound of footsteps in the house.
“He went to check and found his television and Xbox missing. He continued to walk through the house and was confronted by two men, one of whom pointed a firearm at him,” said Mopeli.
“The man ran back to his bedroom and locked himself inside. The two robbers left the scene without injuring the man.
“We encourage residents not to approach criminals. Rather stay put and call your security company, the police or press your panic button if you have one,” she said.
“As we are approaching the festive season, criminals will be on the lookout for easy opportunities.”
She provided some tips for residents to minimise their risk of falling victim to housebreakings:
• Ensure doors are properly closed and locked before you leave home.
• Lock away tools, such as axes, spades, picks and ladders, that can be used in an attack.
• Keys to the safe must be kept on your person.
• Remain alert for a period after getting into bed and switching off the lights.
• Close the curtains so you are not visible in the bedroom from the outside when you are asleep.
• Change locks when keys are lost.
• Have burglar bars fitted to windows.
• Install security gates on doors.
