Correction: Haggard resigned from DA

Voters can make their mark between 7am and 9pm on December 9

Independent candidate in the December 9 Ward 28 by-election Malanie Haggard’s membership from the DA was not terminated, as reported in the article Remember to make your mark in upcoming elections, published on page 2 of the City Times dated December 4.

Haggard resigned from the DA, effective October 1.

The City Times inadvertently stated that wards 27 and 28 became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillors’ memberships from the party and apologises for any inconvenience caused, as this was only the case in Ward 27.

About independent candidates

To contest a municipal election as an independent ward candidate, you don’t need to register as a party does. You must be nominated and submit the required documents during the candidate nomination period, which is detailed in the election timetable published once an election date has been proclaimed. An independent ward candidate can be nominated by a person (the nominator) who: ordinarily resides in the municipality in that ward and is registered on that municipal segment of the voters’ roll.
