A man was recently arrested in Mayfield, Putfontein, for fraud and being in possession of suspected stolen documents. He is accused of manufacturing and selling fake smart IDs to foreign nationals who are in the country illegally.
Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Raider Ubisi said the suspect was arrested after he became involved in an argument with one of the victims.
“Two detective sergeants, Moswarisheng Makofane and Dumisani Nkosi, witnessed the argument they intervened. When they questioned the three men about why they were fighting, the victim said the suspect promised to help him get an ID,” said Ubisi.
“The victim told the police that the alleged fraudster asked him to pay R15 000 for the ID and he paid the money in two installments. The suspect then disappeared for weeks without making any contact with the victim.”
Ubisi said the suspect then allegedly demanded more money from the victim and the pair decided to meet that day for the handover of the ID.
“The fight broke after the victim realised that the photo on the ID was not his and the names were also incorrect,” he said. “When the suspect was searched he was found in possession of two other smart IDs and more suspected stolen documents and passports were found at his premises in Atteridgeville, Pretoria,” said Ubisi.
He was arrested and detained at the Putfontein Police Station.
