Man arrested for selling cough syrup illegally

The spokesperson said it is safer to buy medication from a pharmacy or pay a visit to your local clinic if you need medication.

Police are urging residents not to buy medication sold by strangers on the street. This comes after a man was arrested with suspected stolen medication on January 24 in the Benoni CBD. Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said police were tipped off about the man, who was selling a cough syrup called Broncleer.

“He was found in possession of two large boxes of the cough medicine and he had no licence to trade in this medication,” said Sekele.

He was detained and charged with Section 22A (1) of the Medicines Act. The spokesperson said it is safer to buy medication from a pharmacy or pay a visit to your local clinic if you need medication. “Due to the pandemic, we are aware many people are looking for cheaper medication, however, if you buy medication from someone on the street it could be unsafe or expired,” she said. “Those who may have bought cough medication from this man are urged to dispose of it immediately for their own safety.”
