Couple celebrates 50 years of marriage

A party will be hosted in Bedfordview to celebrate their anniversary; only 50 people will be invited as a symbol of the 50 years they have been married.

The Benoni Town Hall, located on Princess Avenue, is an eyesore today; however, 50 years ago on March 27, it was used as the reception to celebrate Jannie and Hettie van Rensburg’s wedding day.

The couple boasted beautiful the Town Hall looked then and highlighted that the dance floor was their favourite part of the venue.

Jannie and Hettie grew up in Northmead. They met through a friend in 1964 and dated for seven years before they got married.

Their mutual love for films made them visit the movie theatre three times a week to watch the latest movies.

Hettie explained that never missing church service is a ritual they have followed since they started dating 57 years ago until today.

“Our marriage was built on a steel boat, which is why we have been together for so long.”

Jannie jokingly advised that the way to make a marriage work is to acknowledge that the wife is always right.

They firmly believe that marriage is sacred and couples should sort out their issues and not choose divorce as the first option.

The duo raised two sons and are now grandparents to their two-year-old grandson.
