Security firm warns of bakkie thefts on East Rand
The company believes the bakkies are being taken across the border.
Fidelity ADT has issued a warning about a spike in the theft of white double-cab type bakkies in the East Rand.
Vehicles are being targeted at shopping centres, homes and even hijacked while driving.
In March, there were nine reported incidents – two in Benoni (Farrarmere, Rynfield) two in Boksburg, four in Alberton (one of which was a hijacking that happened in New Redruth) and one in Elsburg.
The majority of incidents are taking place during the day and appear to be orchestrated.
Milly Barnard, community development manager at Fidelity ADT, said they believe the reason these vehicles are being targeted is as a result of orders from cross-border criminal syndicates.
“White vehicles are easy to spray and get parts for. Vehicles are often then resold with false papers or stripped for parts,” she said.
“Awareness is your most effective defence. Keep an eye out for any vehicles that may be following you and if in doubt, drive to your nearest police station or security-provider guardhouse.”
She offered motorists the following tips to avoid becoming a victim of this crime:
• Always be aware of your surroundings, this applies to any public parking areas or even if you park on the road outside a property.
• Report any suspicious activity immediately.
• Do not leave valuables in an unattended vehicle.
• Never push the remote locking device while walking away from the vehicle.
• Check that the vehicle is locked by testing the door before you walk away.
• Park your vehicle inside your perimeter security if possible.
“Criminals depend on their targets being distracted. It is when people aren’t paying attention that they become easy targets for criminal activities. Trust your instincts and call for help if you feel unsafe or unsure.
“Many of these syndicates are armed and dangerous and safety is paramount,” Barnard concluded.
