Benoni teen aims for the ultimate in motorsport

Events are held monthly and consist of a full day of racing.

Christian Padayachee, a Grade Eight Benoni High School learner, took to the racetrack for the first time in 2015, but due to financial constraints, only officially started racing in the F400 Karting Challenge in 2018.

From the first time that Christian was allowed to drive a friend’s kart, he knew this was something he would excel in.

Christian’s passion, talent, dedication and love for the sport fuel his desire to eventually make it to the ultimate podium in motorsport.

Joan Smith, from the school, said: “We may very well see the making of another Jody Scheckter, South African-born F1 champ of 1979.”

The F400 Karting Challenge aims to provide a competitive series, easy access to the sport and allow spectators the opportunity to experience the thrill and exhilaration of motorsport.

The series offers individuals and companies an opportunity to compete in karting at a level comparable to the top series.

F400 is a controlled class and this is evident in the extremely close racing where the top ten karts are often separated by a mere second.

Karts are identical (except chassis which may be any CIK type), with minor adjustments only permittable to the chassis setup.

The focus on performance falls on the ability of the drivers.

All motors are sealed to ensure equality across the field.

The F400 Series go-karts use 390cc Honda engines which are then dyno tuned to be equal in power to ensure equality on the track.

Races rotate at Formula K in Benoni, Zwartkops Kart Circuit in Pretoria, Vereeniging Karting Circuit and iDube Kart circuit in KZN.

Events are held monthly and consist of a full day of racing.

Some of Christian’s accomplishments include a first place in the F200 Kart Challenge Vereeniging Kart Circuit Race in October 2019; a second place in the F200 Kart Challenge Zwartkops Race Circuit in March 2019; a third place in the F300 Kart Challenge Vereeniging Kart Circuit Race in February 2020; a first place in the F300 Kart Challenge Zwartkops Race Circuit in February 2021 and another first place in the F300 Kart Challenge Formula K Race Circuit in March 2021.

Formula 1 aces like Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna trace their roots to their karting days.

“The sky is the limit for young Christian,” she said.
