The Families In Need organisation is here to help families in need, but they need help from the families in Benoni to assist.
With a trolley located in Pick n Pay Family Farrarmere, Pick n Pay Northmead Mall and Pick n Pay Oakfields, the organisation, in conjunction with the CPF Sector Two, is asking shoppers to spare a few rands in buying a basic necessity and leaving it in the trolley when they do their shopping.
“Our main focus is feeding the less fortunate families in our community. We ask that the public donate any non-perishable food and hygiene items or animal food,” said founder of the Families In Need organisation Hayley Fekete-Farah.
“These include items like pap, rice, pasta, soya, porridge, milk, soup, tinned foods, tea, sugar, toilet paper.”
According to Hayley, the distribution has not been as effective as they had hoped because the donations have been minimal.
While she understands that everyone’s pockets have taken a knock due to the pandemic, even one item donated will help.
“I used to do this in my own capacity but when Covid-19 started I saw a greater need for assistance,” she explained.
“I approached various people to help me and the project began in March and stopped in August, it started again about a month and a half ago.”
When the items are enough to donate, Hayley and a team of helpers make up hampers to give to those in need.
The City Times met Hayley at one of the drop-off spots and spoke to the co-owners of the Pick n Pay Northmead Mall.
Rudolf Bornman and Robert Storey, who co-own the grocery store, said it is important to help the community when an opportunity arises.
“We believe we need to look after the community,” Robert said.
“More and more people had little to no income since last year, so we got involved to assist them.”
Hayley said there is not enough kindness in the world and this is her way of trying to help others.
“It is my passion to help people,” she concluded.
Families who are in need are encouraged to message Hayley on the Families In Need Facebook page.
