Estelle Nell writes:
My son, Kevin, was in a serious motorbike accident in the late afternoon on June 2. We arrived at the scene within five minutes and by then there were so many people helping him.
It is important to us to thank them. Strangers who took control, I hope you all find this message because if it was not for you, our lives would have ended that day.
The person who was holding a drip, the people who called the emergency services, the stranger keeping him and us calm, Antoinette from ER24, there were so many of you, and you handled it because it was important to you.
This young man who you do not even know, your hands did not care to have blood on, you were only concerned for him.
Kevin is off the ventilator now and was asking about the guy who rushed to him first, the one who was holding his leg, a leg so seriously damaged, and yet you did not care about all the blood, you were holding that leg together as if it was you own child.
He also asked about the guy who took off his belt to stop the bleeding. You all saved his life.
Every person who was there we can never thank you enough, everything you all did was important.
If you were there, tell us, as it is important to us and important to Kevin as he wants to thank you.
May God bless you all.”
Editor’s note: Don Pretorius came forward as the man who assisted Kevin first and kept him from bleeding out from the massive injury sustained to his leg when Nell posted on Facebook.
He responded: “Hi Estelle, I am glad Kevin is stable and on the slow road to recovery. I was the first one there that Kevin is asking about. I used my material mask to bow tie his arteries closed and stop the blood flow until your husband pitched up and we could finally get a belt when the tow truck drivers arrived. It was only a pleasure and I am glad I could assist your family. If it will help with Kevin’s recovery, I am more than happy to visit him in hospital.”
Estelle then responded: “Don Pretorius, thank God again, we found you! Sir, you are the reason Kevin is alive! You saved his life. I cannot imagine what you went through at that moment. Kevin remembers you and talks about you as if you are known to us. You need to realise you can wear the crown of a hero, you earned that and yet you are humble. You were there in the most horrifying moment of my child’s life. How can we ever thank you? We would love to meet you! Imagine when Kevin can shake your hand and look into your eyes. Thank you!”
