Pit bull terrier pup stolen in Farrarmere found in Daveyton

Owners reunited with their Pit bull after it disappeared. Pet lovers/owners are urged to be vigilant as pets are being targeted by thieves.

A Farramere family is grateful to be reunited with their pit bull terrier puppy after it was stolen from their yard recently and sold to someone in Daveyton.

The owner of the dog, Hannes van den Berg, explained the pup was in the yard when they left their home for a few hours.

When they returned in the evening the pup was gone.

“My wife, Rina, posted on the community groups asking residents if they had seen our puppy roaming the streets.

“We received a few leads and drove around asking businesses along Great North Road for any CCTV footage they might have in the hopes that we would know in which direction to look.

“After a few dead ends we found a store that had footage of two men walking with a dog and we recognised our dog because of its distinctive birthmark around his neck.”

The footage received gave the family an idea of what the suspects looked like and a few days later when Rina was following another lead in the area she saw the suspects in the same street she was in.

“I called my husband to tell him that I have seen the men who had walked with our puppy and one was wearing the same jacket and backpack.

“While I followed the men my husband called members of the CPF and Afriforum who jumped on board to confront them.

“The men admitted to selling the puppy to a man in Daveyton, and led us to the man and we found our puppy in his yard.”

The puppy was dehydrated and traumatised.

Van den Berg advised other pet owners to remain vigilant as dog thefts are on the rise and pet parents should not leave their dogs unattended at any time. The family shared the following tips:

• Never leave your dog alone outside.

• Do not let young children walk your dogs.

• Make sure your dog is microchipped and the details are up to date.

He thanked the community and all who helped them find their puppy.
