Learner who allegedly beheaded bird facing disciplinary action

The video of the incident surfaced on social media on August 5.

Hoërskool Hans Moore is taking disciplinary action against one of its learners who was recorded on video allegedly beheading a live pigeon.

In the video, the bird appears to be injured and unable to fly.

The video and photo of the incident surfaced on Facebook on August 5 in which the teen is seen tramping on the bird’s head before grabbing it by its neck and flinging it.

A still image shows a hand holding a bird’s head.

“Hans Moore is aware of the video and takes an extremely hard stance against any possible injury or abuse against animals,” the school’s principal, Ertjies Hattingh, said in a statement to the City Times on August 6.

“We immediately contacted the SPCA and are working hand-in-hand to action and conclude the investigative process, which will be finalised in a set disciplinary procedure.

“All the parties, including the SPCA, will be present and active during the process.

“The process should be finalised within the next two weeks and the school, with the SPCA, will comment on the outcome once finalised.”

The Benoni SPCA declined to comment on the matter at this stage.
