Eddy House salutes BCT on 100 years of keeping communities well-informed

Eddy House residents, current, past and those to come wish Benoni City Times the happiest of birthdays.

Eddy House, one of Methodist Homes’ 15 retirement villages and a longtime supporter of the Benoni City Times, congratulated the community newspaper on celebrating its 100th birthday in September.

Eddy House manager Alan Geddes said a big part of achieving this tremendous milestone is no doubt thanks to the support of loyal friends, and it is clear that Caxton has many.

“It is largely through the pages of the Caxton newspapers that Eddy House too has gained many great friends over our 50-year history,” said Geddes.

“Most of our residents are from Benoni and are avid readers of the City Times. It is through their trust in the newspaper that they found their new home in our village.”

Geddes said the newspaper keeps them in the loop of what’s happening in their neighbourhood and provides insight into fellow citizens.

“Its pages reveal the exploits of Benoni’s greatest achievers, including world champion boxers, swimmers, rugby players, politicians and their wives, as well as actors.

“Fellow citizens whose hobbies and pastimes took them to great heights, such as Lorna Cochrane swimming the Midmar Mile, Faith Launder turning 100 and Sr May Homer winning bowling championships. These are just some of the wonderful stories shared in the pages of the City Times, he said.

“How we long for our weekly edition filled with stories that make up our lives and keep us informed of our fellow ‘Benonians’, each story weaving a rich tapestry in the locals’ lives.”

Alan added that both Eddy House and Fairleads Retirement Village, another care home under the Methodist Homes’ umbrella, have seen their fair share of Benoni ‘celebrities’ and together they have housed a great number of Benoni heroes and heroines.

“Every one of our residents is a hero and a Benoni legend.

“Here’s hoping that 50 years from now, when Methodist Homes also celebrates its 100th anniversary, City Times will reserve the front cover. On behalf of all Eddy House residents, current, past and those to come, we would like to wish BCT the happiest of birthdays,” said Geddes.
