Case against fake doctor postponed

The 45-year-old suspect, who made a brief appearance in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court, was remanded in custody.

On September 29, the case against a man accused of fraudulently issuing medical certificates under the name of a doctor at whose practice he had previously worked was postponed to October 7 for a formal bail hearing.

The 45-year-old suspect, who made a brief appearance in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court, was remanded in custody.

The alleged fraudster was arrested on September 9 at a local internet café after he was found to have issued fraudulent medical certificates.

He was found in possession of 38 blank medical certificates, a stamp, negative Covid-19 declaration forms and various other fraudulent medical documents in the name of Dr Modisane.

The arrest came after the HPCSA Inspectorate Office, in collaboration with the Ekurhuleni East Crime Intelligence and the EMPD Community Liaison Unit, established that 19 employees at a retailer in Northmead Square had submitted 41 fraudulent medical certificates to their employer.

Eight of the employees appeared in court on September 13 and were released on bail. They will all reappear in court alongside the fraudulent doctor accused once the trial begins.
