SDC assists young women to reach their full potential

The learnership started on August 2; candidates will graduate in July.

Wattville resident Boitumelo Tshimeloane was one of the six girls selected out of 165 applicants to take part in the Fix Skills Development Corporation (SDC) learnership 2021 with executive business coach Sonja Shear.

The initiative was founded by SDC and Fikile Moeti (founder of The Fix Scholarship), who came together to make a difference in the lives of young, female entrepreneurs who have the potential and drive to succeed and improve their business skills.

The selected few will take part in the SDC Wealth Management course. This will allow them to become certified in the insurance and financial sector.

Shear joined the learnership in 2020 and works with the selected candidates throughout their time on the learnership as a mentor, focusing on self-development and self-awareness, designed specifically for the learnership programme.

“I went in unsure of what to expect from the ladies and realised they needed coaching on self-development, leadership development and leading themselves.

“We meet online every second week, where we cover different topics, allow them to set smart goals and take them out of their comfort zones.”

She added it is amazing to see the change in the young women after a few months and the confidence they gain from the sessions.

Tshimeloane, who volunteers at a local community NPO and is part of the community crime watch group, is eager to learn and grow in her pursuit to achieve her goals.

“I believe when you are educated you can conquer the world. I know I can make a difference by doing something and not being stuck in victim mode.

“The coaching has also kept me motivated and I have gained so much confidence.”

The candidates who have been selected to be part of the learnership will be exposed to practical training across active client portfolios, online systems and fieldwork with client interaction.
