Meet your ward candidates

Municipal elections will take place on November 1, from 7am to 9pm

Ward 29 (Actonville, the Wattville Hostel and Emandleni) Action SA candidate Eric Simelane
“Let’s act as one to deliver services to our community. I will prioritise the maintenance of residents’ flats and hostel, fixing potholes and road maintenance in Actonville.

“Street maintenance at Emandleni informal settlement is also vital to improve accessibility, along with unblocking the drainage system to prevent flooding. I will prioritise water taps in the informal settlement while making provision of electricity to the unconnected households.

“I intend on resolving community complaints with immediate effect and work towards achieving affordable rates of rent paid by flats residents. Implementing the removal of waste dumped illegally as well as stopping illegal connection of electricity will remain a priority.

“On my appointment, I will work on immediately repairing streetlights and maintenance. I will assist residents who experience incorrect billing for municipal services, and job creation through locally based service delivery projects.”

Ward 27 (Morehill, Airfield, Northmead, Ebotse Golf and Country Estate and the bulk of Rynfield) Action SA candidate Audrey Steyn
“My vision is to work collectively with stakeholders and the community to serve, build and rejuvenate our once the golden City of Ekurhuleni.

“Growing up in Benoni and living in my town of birth, I have been witness to many years of lack of service delivery, which has motivated me to fix it.

“If you want a councillor who is proactive, not reactive, I’m your candidate. If you want a councillor who gets municipal officials working for you, I’m your candidate. If you want old and failing electricity, water and roads infrastructure fixed, I’m your candidate. If you want regular refuse removal, litter picking, clean streets and parks, I’m your candidate. If you want ethical representation at council, I’m your candidate.

“My focus is on action that moves Ward 27 forward from failed service delivery.”

Ward 28 (Lakefield, Farrarmere, and Alphen Park) Action SA candidate Christian de Jager
“I will fight for responsive, customer-centric service, improved service delivery communication and quicker response time to queries.

“Greater investment into infrastructure is needed so that more is done regarding outdated stormwater drains, water supply networks and substations. A cleaner city is vital where streets and parks are cleared of rubbish, thus no illegal dumping and where public spaces are maintained.

“I will fight corruption and make sure tax money is spent on improving the lives of citizens. Action SA focuses on moving South Africa forward from broken promises, corruption and failed government to one of service delivery, ethical government and progress. I am a servant leader and part of the new dawn catalysing real change.”

Ward 29 ANC candidate Imtiaz Loonat
“I have represented the people of Ward 29 with dedication and honesty and made sure basic services were provided to all our people even when budgets were cut due to Covid-19.

“I will continue to assist the people of my ward through consultation on the needs of our people. We will ask the waste department to improve on programmes to eliminate illegal dumping. Our roads that need drainage and resurfacing must be done urgently. Maintenance to rented municipal flats needs to be attended to, while electrification of the informal settlement of Emandleni must be accelerated. The wastewater coming from the hostel onto Styx Road must be stopped and the hostel made to be more habitable for residents.

“Where the municipality lacked in my previous term, I will continue to demand till we achieve an acceptable service.”

Ward 102 DA candidate Eulbri Kubayi
“I strongly believe in promoting efficient and good governance and ensuring the residents of Ekurhuleni receive basic services, as enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa.

“Furthermore, as a councillor, I am able to represent residents’ issues with the City and be the link for representation on issues of public importance and driving the budgeting and spending process. More importantly, I will also be playing an oversight role – ensuring the municipality is accountable to its residents.

“I plan to drive the following pertinent issues in Ward 102: repair and maintenance of streetlights, human settlements irregularities, waste removal, electrification backlog, illegal dumping, crime and substance abuse, social services, infringement of by-laws and land invasion.

“My vision for Ward 102 is to see the community enjoy interrupted and consistent service delivery.”

Ward 109 ANC candidate Masele Madihlaba
“I am the current ward councillor of 109 and MMC of Infrastructure Services. I was a councillor in 2011 for Ward 67.

“I have held numerous roles in the community such as being the SGB member at WJ Mpengesi Primary School from 2015, while I have helped with the then distribution of food parcels, bringing Unjani Clinic to the ward and building of houses at Barcelona Extension 32, etc.

“I plan to complete the outstanding projects such as the community multi-purpose centre (Thulani VD), the extension of Barcelona Clinic, construction of a library at Quantum VD, paving of the 45 untarred streets, stormwater management at Ext Two, Three, Seven and 32, the park at Thulani and Ext Seven, construction of Barcelona Primary School, and a sewer master plan to be implemented.

“Constant communication with all stakeholders is of importance, along with creating employment opportunities for youth.”

Ward 110 DA candidate Khathutshelo Rasilingwane
“I am passionate about my community and strive to be a representative voice for residents in the ward. I believe the DA is the only party that can adequately serve the community through its values of freedom, fairness, opportunity and diversity.

“My plan for the ward is to represent the community concerns in council so that solutions can be reached for the numerous problems residents face. I plan to continue reaching out to the community through different platforms, such as house meetings and public meetings. I also plan to continue being responsive or accessible and accountable to the community through all social and digital platforms.

“I can easily empathise and relate to people. This skill has helped me in my role as a PR councillor. It is a unique skill, which makes it easier for me to quickly identify and understand residents’ pain points and challenges.”

Ward 28 DA candidate Mary Goby
“As the current councillor for Ward 28, I strive to ensure I am always available to take up issues for my community until they are resolved.

“While we have come a long way, I am ready to serve the community again. I have been fighting to have the blocked stormwater drains replaced, as many have collapsed due to old infrastructure.

“Our maintenance of parks will also be a priority, as well as delivering quality services. It is time to bring this ward back to what Benoni should be, the Jewel of the East. I want to give the residents and community the ‘blue dream’ of a City that is effectively run, free from corruption and cadre deployment.

“We are ready to get things done. It is time for a capable government to deliver quality services and get the basics right.”

Ward 109 DA candidate Raymond Dhlamini
“I am standing as a ward councillor because I believe in the DA’s policy for freedom, fairness and opportunity.

“My passion is to serve the community and to address their issues by using council processes. The community needs renewed hope and a capable government that gets the basics right and gets things done.

“I will be dealing with service delivery issues affecting the community in the ward. The main issues I will be driving in the ward are roads and stormwater infrastructure, illegal dumping and persistent sewer overflow that is adversely affecting the community of Ward 109.

“The residents of Ward 109 and Ekurhuleni deserve a well-run government that delivers basic services and provides a healthy and safe environment. A DA-run Ekurhuleni will get the basics right by ensuring effective and responsive service delivery. I am ready to serve!”

Ward 27 ANC candidate Jacques Meiring
“I am a long-term resident of Benoni, so I understand the people who live in the area and their needs and concerns.

“I have been involved in sorting out service delivery for six years, dealing with the concerns of over 150 000 residents in nine different wards daily. I have also been involved in a few capital budget development projects, such as the development of the Bunny Park and pushing through the negotiation of the water tower that was previously scheduled to be a 10-year project.

“I believe this is more than just politics, it is a calling that one is given to serve people and make sure the council and the people receive effective communication.”
