As the rainy season approaches, the roads will become slippery and motorists won’t be able to see what is ahead of them as they drive through these storms.
Benonians have raised their concerns about the conditions of the roads.
Benoni AH resident Andy van der Merwe is unhappy with the condition of Larch Road, which is in front of his premises. He said that they have been battling for years to get the road fixed.
“We have contacted the call centre numerous times but to no avail. People are starting to take action by themselves and are causing more problems.
“This used to be a tar road but it has deteriorated completely.”
Rynfield resident Craig de Vasconcello said that the Ekurhuleni metro has neglected to repair the potholes on Hartshorne Street and had not covered the exposed manholes even after it was reported.
Other roads in Benoni that had been reported include Snake Road, Pretoria Road, Hlobisa Street, Ukuningi Street, Inkenthsane Street, Mpangele Street, Link Road and Glyn Road.
Ward 73 (Western Extension, Benoni CBD, Mackenzie Park, New Modder, Rynsoord and Kingsway) councillor Sinethemba Matiwane said that in Kingsway, road budgets were cut and streets were left unfinished with gravel.
According to the Ekurhuleni metro, the budget for the Roads Department had been cut by 75% due to the situation presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The metro is doing what is reasonably possible under the circumstances to ensure road safety,” said Zweli Dlamini, the spokesperson of the metro.
Residents are encouraged to report any road-related issues to the Ekurhuleni Call Centre on 0860 543 000 or email call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za or use the My CoE app.
