Giving children an opportunity to leave with employable traits is the core function of the World of Work Programme at Belvedere School in Farrarmere.
This has been made easier by the Joburg Scaffolding Company after they donated metal pipes to the school on November 23, which will be used for practise by the learners as they train in scaffolding.
The principal of the school, Johannes du Plessis, said learners can leave the school with an NQF level one qualification, which equates to a Grade Nine.
“What we want to do with our programme is ensure these learners are employable by training them and inviting reputable service providers to conduct the tests and provide the learners with certificates in the trades.
“As an added benefit, learners are also trained in forklifting and receive a forklifting licence upon completion of the course,” he said.
“We had nine boys in our World of Work Programme last year, four of them are now permanently employed.”
Owner of Joburg Scaffolding Otto Roetger said people don’t realise that a scaffolding trade is a the ticket to success since these structures are always needed in the erection of buildings.
He added that his company employs people from various backgrounds and will work hand in hand with the school to employ learners who receive their qualifications and can reach the employment standards of the company.
Scaffolding is only one of the school’s World of Work programmes.
Another is training in basic home and palliative care for learners through Hospice East Rand and training by the school’s in-house chef.
“This provides learners with a qualification in caregiving and cooking, which gives them a better chance at employment,” du Plessis said.
The World of Work Programme started four years ago, with training in basic skills and has progressed into more advanced trades.
The principal thanked Roetger for the donation and assured him that it will be used to give learners the skills that they require.
