Thousands lost in online scam

Five cases of fraud were opened at the Benoni Police Station.

The Benoni SAPS is pleading with community members to assist them in locating a suspected fraudster.

Five cases of fraud linked to a business called TKL Online Revenue were opened at the Benoni Police Station last month.

According to Capt Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, it is alleged that the person has defrauded others through investment advertisements posted on social media platforms.

“Once the victims have made contact with the fraudster, he starts to communicate with them via Whatsapp. Then after the money has been deposited into his account, he deactivates his cellphone number,” said Sekele.

“It is alleged that the fraudster uses different banking details.”

Sekele said the first victim was robbed of R100 000, the second lost R184 000 and the other R36 000. The other two cases have been closed.

“We are warning the public to be more careful when they see ads on the internet as there are a lot of scams.

When you see something online please double check if the business is registered and also do some backgrounds check before depositing your hard-earned money,” she said.

Police urge anyone who might have been a victim or with information that can assist with the investigation to contact 011 747 0053 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MYSAPS app.
