Mayor adopts special needs school in Daveyton

The school caters to children with various learning needs and disabilities.

The Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Tania Campbell recently adopted Usizo Lwethu School for Learners with Special Educational Needs in Daveyton as part of the metro’s Adopt-a-School programme.

The programme forms part of an outreach initiative spearheaded by the Youth Directorate within the mayor’s office to support the school over the 2022/2023 financial year.

Established in 1984, the school accommodates children with various learning needs and disabilities. It also accommodates learners on a lesser scale of autistic spectrum disorder, behavioural disorders, cerebral palsy, physical disability and partial sightedness.

Accompanied by MMCs and the Multi-Party Coalition, Campbell recently visited the school and donated dignity packs to learners.

The delegation had an opportunity to assess the state of the school and identify how the municipality may be able to assist in improving conditions on the premises.

Campbell said: “I have had a long-standing passion for assisting learners with special educational needs. We hope that by working closely with this school, we can gain invaluable insight into some of the issues facing persons with disabilities in the City and chart a roadmap on how to resolve them.”
