Kids Haven programmes build communities
“I was assigned to the centre in 2019 as part of my social auxiliary practical studies,” she said.
Working within communities that have been battered and bruised by socio-economic hardships, one would expect individuals who have lost all hope.
However, Mabel Jayane, a member of Kids Haven’s Precare dream team, said its continued efforts and skills development programmes are keeping family units strong.
Precare is the term used by the organisation to investigate reports of child neglect as a result of poverty.

Upon meeting with members of the community, as well as the affected family, the team rallies all necessary resources to ensure the needs of the children are met and that the parents or caregivers are given help and assistance.
“I was assigned to the centre in 2019 as part of my social auxiliary practical studies,” she said.
“I immediately developed a love for the community, especially the children and was fortunate to be employed here, where I could continue my work and make a difference.”
She continues by saying the foundation of Kids Haven’s Precare programme is rooted in ensuring children are not merely removed from their homes and placed within the care of the centre, but to rather uplift and strengthen parental abilities.
“Our organisation has a long and successful reputation within the East Rand. Therefore, community members do not hesitate to contact us when they identify a family in need,” she said.
“They know we do not merely deliver food parcels, but that we work with families to ensure we provide them with life-changing skills that would ultimately benefit everyone.

“We have empowered 410 households to establish food gardens. The produce not only ensures they have healthy and nutritious food, but many are now able to generate an income from its sale.”
According to her, many families who fall under the centre’s care may not have everything they want or need, but they thrive under the guidance given to them by the team.
