Mayfield taps run dry for several days

Residents breathed a sigh of relief when water was restored in Mayfield on March 6.

The water supply in Mayfield has been restored after residents were left without water for four days.

According to Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the City was informed by Rand Water that there was a fault at the Mapleton pump station, which resulted in pumping at a reduced capacity.

“On March 6, repairs had been completed and pumping at full capacity had begun. The Rand Water Vlakfontein reservoir that supplies Daveyton and Mayfield took long to restore water because of Rand Water’s system,” said Dlamini.

Dry taps in Mayfield forced residents to fetch water near a dumpsite.

Residents were forced to fetch water from an underground pipe, which supplied water at an open field near a dumpsite.

One of the affected residents, Tshiamo Buthelezi, said having no water at home forced him to collect water from an unhygienic environment.

Buthelezi said he boiled the water first before he drank it.
