Fans want to get back into stadiums

Despite vaccination and eased lockdown restriction, fans are still not allowed to attend live matches.

Frustrated fans and small business owners in Daveyton have expressed disappointment that spectators are still not allowed at stadiums.

It has been over two years since the country faced harsh lockdown restrictions, of which one was the banning of fans from attending sporting events.

Despite vaccination and eased lockdown restrictions, which include attendance of 2 000 people outside, fans are still not allowed to attend sporting activities.

The City Times spoke to community members who said they felt it was time they were granted the opportunity to watch their favourite stars.

Simiso Majola said: “Some of us feel like our teams are not performing well when we are not at stadiums to support them.”

Another soccer fan, Zandile Mfezi, said she thinks the PSL and DStv are pushing an agenda not known to fans.

“Look at what the EPL and other leagues are doing; fans have returned to the stadiums,” Mfezi said.

The banning of fans at stadiums has forced small business owners around stadiums to reinvent their strategy, as they’ve also been affected.

“I was selling mini-vuvuzelas at various stadiums. The government’s decision has had a massive impact on me. In the last two years, I’ve had to think of other ways to make money to put food on the table,” said Bafana Mohape.
