Due to the current dire state of the Benoni SAPS clearance centre building, police employees working there have temporarily been accommodated at Tsakane and Germiston SAPS.
The officers have been assisting clients outside and inside their vehicles since last year because the offices have been vandalised.
The neglect of the facility, situated in Bedford Avenue, has affected the smooth running of services, which has resorted to client complaints.
The services that were offered at the building were import and exports of vehicles, clearances (engine changes) and investigations into stolen vehicles.
According to SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello, the building is no longer used by the SAPS.
“SAPS employees who dealt with clearances and other matters have been accommodated at Tsakane and Germiston police stations.
“However, to not to hamper service delivery and inconvenience the public, officers have been allocated in Benoni daily to serve clients from 08:00 to 12:00,” said Sello.
A local export agent, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed relief that at least services were not halted.
“Although the SAPS’s physical offices are still closed, we are happy that some of the officers who deal with exports and imports are now based across the street to assist us,” he said.
