Pugs and puppies celebrate Easter

Happy yappy pugs offer cuddly entertainment at the annual Pug Rescue’s annual Easter market

Pug Rescue South Africa was the ‘yappiest’ place to be on April 2 as they hosted its annual Happy Yappy Easter Pawrade.

The event forms part of the organisation’s fund-raising initiative to raise much-needed funds to subsidise its veterinary bills.

“We have been running the Thanda Inja project in Daveyton since 2013 aimed at sterilising and vaccinating dogs against rabies,” said Cheryl Gaw, founder of the organisation.

“Our continued efforts within the community is to reduce the dog population thus ensuring that residents have healthy animal companions.”

Since its inception in 2013, Pug Rescue SA has homed and rehomed 2 500 pugs, with the facility housing an average of 155 animals at any given time.

According to Malcolm Gaw, many pugs, along with other small breed companion dogs, are surrendered to the facility due to immigration or elderly pet owners who are downscaling to retirement villages that are not animal-friendly.

“There has thankfully been a shift in animal adoption, with more people opting to adopt,” he said.

“Rescued animals are such grateful and loving companions.”

Pug Rescue SA is open from Monday to Saturday. For more information call 082 508 0384.
