WATCH: RE/MAX crowns best baker of dog biscuits

Doggy treats were galore during the Best Baker Doggy Biscuit Bake-off.

Tons of dog biscuits baked in various shapes and sizes set tails wagging for our four-legged friends who attended RE/MAX Dazzle’s first-ever Best Baker Doggy Biscuit Bake-off at the Northfield Methodist Church on April 9.

Organised by Rhoda Toker, Teri de Beer and Gerrie Alberts of RE/MAX, the competition was aimed at assisting local SPCAs and other animal welfare organisations.

Toker said they decided to host the competition after seeing a need to give back to the community.

“Because we are animal lovers, we thought of this fun initiative to bring animal lovers together for a good cause. We wanted to reach out to the Benoni and Kempton Park SPCAs, The Animal Guardians, Pug Rescue and Paws4U therapy dogs by collecting biscuits for them,” said Toker.

Ten master bakers from Benoni and as far as Pretoria went head-to-head as they showcased their homemade treats for judging.

Malcolm Gaw of Pug Rescue judged the biscuits on presentation, ingredients and taste.

Six dogs also played a role in choosing the winner, as they were observed which of the biscuits were eaten by the dogs the most.

Liz Maas of Maas Cookies was the winner, followed by Tamara Allen of Wag Bakery. The third and fourth place winners were Lee Young of Coconut Organic Health biscuit and Vanessa Nicholls of Vanessa’s Doggy Cookies.

Winners each went home with prizes, including cash.

Cailynn Davel (12) from Benoni received a special prize after she made homemade cupcakes for dogs.

Johan Jacobs and Malcolm Moodie Attorneys donated R2 000 to the four animal welfare organisations. MC Paul Rotherham thanked donors and everyone who participated in the competition.
