Lions host first Environmental Awareness Expo

To save the environment recycling and thinking ‘green’ must become a habit.

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club, in partnership with Desco, Boibin and Zero Waste Foundation, will host its first Environmental Awareness Expo on June 4.

The event will feature stalls offering green solutions and expert advice on how to become a sustainably ‘green’ household or business coinciding with World Environment Day on June 5.

Speakers will also include MMC for the Environment and Waste Management André du Plessis.

The event forms part of the Lions’ five pillars of service and is a follow-on of its successful environmental awareness campaign held at Lakeside Mall in March.

“We are committed to making a difference and leaving the world a better place than we found it, therefore protecting the environment and our planet is crucial,” said Beaulieu Maree, club president.

“We aim to formalise this into an annual event and would like to see it growing both in the number of ‘green’ service providers as well as community interest.”

Maree said they hope to see recycling more actively promoted and made more convenient to residents in terms of collection points.

“Our ‘green’ rule at home is, think before you chuck,” she said.

“The easiest way is to start recycling is to allocate separate bins for items such as plastic (PET), glass, paper and composting.”

The event will take place from 09:00 at the Belvedere School, Uys Krige Street, Farrarmere.

Entrance is R10 per person or a bag of recyclables that can include plastic bottle tops, used printer cartridges, spectacles and sunglasses or books. Glass, plastic and paper collection points will also be available.

Come, support the initiative, enjoy school sports and nibble on the great selection available from the food vendors.
