Northerns win, Old Bens stutter
They beat Sporting 3-1 while Old Bens lost to Edenvale 2-1.
Benoni Northerns recorded their second win in a row when they defeated Sporting 3-0 in round 10 of the Easterns Super League at Northerns grounds on May 21.
They beat Edenvale 3-1 on May 14 to bounce back from four back-to-back losses in the league. The wins took them to 13 points after nine games.
Coach Enrique Juanas-Uriol said he was pleased with his side’s performance.
“Our intensity was excellent. We won many 50/50 balls and pressed as a unit forcing them to make mistakes. We worked for one another and defended as a unit. That’s the best we’ve played this season.
“The first half ended 0-0 but we knew it was only a matter of time and that’s exactly what happened in the second half. The final score was 3-0 and it was not as easy as the result suggests but it was a comfortable and well deserved win.
“We are looking forward to playing Olympia on Saturday. We will put in the hard work at training this week. Should we continue with the strength, unity and character shown in the last two matches, we have a good chance of getting a result in our favour.
“Olympia has our full respect. The business needs to be done on the field and our players have the ability to make it happen.”
The reserve side also made back to back wins after beating Sporting 1-0 this past weekend and Edenvale 2-1 on May 14.
Northerns will take on Olympia on Saturday at 15:30. The reserve teams will play the curtain-raiser at 13:15.
Following their break last week, Old Bens were humbled 2-1 by Edenvale on May 21. Bens had something to smile for as the reserves outclassed Edenvale reserves 4-1.
Coach Mike Lee told the City Times that they have to regroup and get back to winning ways when they host Sporting at Currin Park on May 28.
The loss sees Bens remain on 18 points and second behind Alberton on the log. Kick-off against Sporting is at 15:30.
