Security guards injured during armed robbery

Shots ring out during an armed robbery at a guest house

Two private security guards were shot and injured during an armed robbery at a guest house in Rynfield, in the early hours of May 24.

According to police information the officers responded to a call of an active robbery at 01:55.

“It is alleged that five armed suspects entered the premises by scaling the wall and bypassing the electric fence,” said Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni SAPS.

“The intruders then started knocking on the room doors. In one of the rooms the occupant was held at gunpoint while the perpetrators ransacked the room making off with his cellphone and clothes.”

Upon arrival a shoot-out ensued and the two responding guards sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body.

The suspects fled the scene.

“The guards were transported to hospital for treatment and were discharged on the same day,” said Sekele.

“A case of business robbery is currently under investigation and no arrests have been made.”

Station commander Brigadier Thabo Mphuthi condemned the attack on the guards and is appealing to anyone with information that could assist to arrest the suspects to call CrimeStop on 08600 10111 or use my SAPS app.
