Scout complete extension of clubhouse

“The expansion is part of my legacy project and pays homage to influence scouting has had on my life.”

More than 100 hours of intensive work, fine logistical planning and a sprinkle of creative thinking have led to the unveiling of the extended Ninth Benoni Scout Clubhouse in Lakefield.

The clubhouse has remained in its original state since its inception in the late 80s, but growing scouting numbers and previously instituted Covid-19 regulations exposed the need for expansion.

As part of his Springbok Trail, which is the highest award within the scouting movement, Jason Bartholomew (17) of Atlasville called on a decade of scouting knowledge to undertake the mammoth task, as part of his Community Service Project.

“I decided to focus my attention on our own clubhouse as our troop is constantly growing and we needed to use the available space optimally, to accommodate the Scouts, six patrol dens as well as all our equipment,” said Jason.

“Although we didn’t make enormous changes to the structure, we used what we had at our disposal to meet the plan.”

He continued by saying that although he did not complete all the physical work alone, the task required that he spent no less than 40 hours on planning and presenting the project to all the stakeholders.

“Once approved and finalised, I had to arrange the logistics and assign tasks to everyone involved and ensure that each aspect is completed within the assigned timeframe,” he said.

“The project entailed a lot of meticulous planning but given my scouting experience, I had all the practical knowledge to see the project through.

The extended clubhouse now boasts an open-plan scout hall, by extending the roof and strategically placing cargo containers on the perimeter, the patrol dens are now independent of the hall.

With the completion of this project, Jason now has to complete two more advancements to qualify for his Springbok badge.

According to Errol Treacher, Troop Scouter for Ninth Benoni, the Springbok badge is not only the highest honour within the scouting fraternity but also an amalgamation of all the skillsets that have been taught throughout a member’s tenure.

“Once all his advancements have been completed Jason will be invited to a panel interview during which his personal growth will be measured,” said Errol. “Should he be successful he will be awarded his Springbok award.”

He continued by saying that scout activities are not solely based on survival techniques but are focused on instilling real-world knowledge in participants which helps them grow spiritually.
