Emlotheni residents homeless after fire

Some of the residents are now living with their neighbours while they try and rebuild their lives.

Residents of Emlotheni informal settlement in Wattville are rebuilding their lives after their belongings were destroyed when a fire broke out in Godlo and Kekana streets recently.

Residents managed to escape the fire with no injuries.

Some of the mattresses which were supplied by DEMS to victims.

 

According to William Ntladi, the Ekurhuleni district manager and media liaison for Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), on arrival about 40 shacks were engulfed in flames.

“Back-up was activated and the fire was extinguished. Twelve firefighters and three fire engines attended the scene. No casualties were reported.

“The scene was declared safe the next morning,” said Ntladi.

Ward 30 Clr Kenny Ranyawa said community members have since received mattresses and blankets from DEMS.

“The victims also received grocery vouchers and clothing from the Department of Social Development and generous community members,” said Ranyawa.
