FOLLOW-UP: Mitchley brothers raise thousands for conservation

Through the support of followers the pair raised R20 000 for the reserve’s anti-poaching unit.

On July 10, Gregg Mitchley and his bother, Graeme, set off on a road trip to the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, in Hoedspruit, in an effort to raise funds for the reserve’s anti-poaching unit.

Throughout the trip, Graeme, a teacher from Dowerglen and conservation enthusiast, shared fascinating wildlife tidbits on both his and Gregg’s Gregg Mitchley Foundation’s (GMF) social media platforms.

During their week-long trip the duo channelled their inner child as they played ‘spot-the-rhino.’

“Seeing a rhino is a magical experience, which will soon become a thing of myths and legends if we do not drastically get involved in their conservation,” said Gregg, of Rynfield.

“By capturing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat we wanted to highlight not only how rare these sightings are becoming, but also how without our concerted efforts, these beauties may one day soon only be found in zoos.”

As the two meandered across sandy roads en route to their destination, the brothers relied on their quick wit and quirky antics to shake the pockets of followers in order to make a donation to the unit.

“Our initial goal was to raise R65 000 by July 18, but soon realised that we were perhaps overly zealous,” said Gregg.

“We were, however, not disappointed with the support we got and were able to make a deposit of R20 000 to the cause. Every bit helps.”

Having spent a week together, the siblings hope to collaborate in future conservation-centred projects soon.

“The trip was a hoot and thankfully did not result in either of us pouting or uttering whiney are we there yet,” he said laughing.

“I believe we have so much more that we can do and I look forward to more adventures with my brother.”

The brothers thanked everyone involved in the project’s success as well as those that donated to the cause.
