EMPD recovers hijacked Polo

The vehicle had been reported as hijacked in Dobsonville in 2017.

On August 4, members of the EMPD Bronberg Precinct recovered a vehicle that had been hijacked in 2017.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, EMPD spokesperson, members were conducting regular duties on the N12 when they spotted a suspicious-looking white Volkswagen Polo.

“The driver of the vehicle was instructed to stop at the Kingsway on-ramp and an inspection of the vehicle was conducted,” said Thepa.

“It was discovered that the vehicle had been reported as hijacked in Dobsonville, six years ago.”

When questioned about the vehicle, the driver claimed that paperwork relating to its release from SAPS storage was still with the relevant police station.

“Information from the designated tracking company indicated that the driver was not the legal owner of the vehicle.

“The driver confirmed this but told officers that the owner sent him to collect the vehicle following its recovery,” he said.

“The owner could not be contacted to confirm this claim and the driver was therefore handed over to the SAPS for further questioning.

“No arrest was made but the vehicle was booked in at the Aeraton SAPS pending further investigations.”
