ERK paddlers end winter season on a high
The duo clocked 01:32 in the 20km race to finish first in their category and sixth overall.
The East Rand Kayaking (ERK) legends Michael Stewart and David Gerber claimed the sub-veteran masters’ title during the flat-race marathon at the Florida Lake in Roodepoort, on August 19.
The duo clocked 01:32 in the 20km race to finish first in their category and sixth overall.
The ERK team of Jonathan Nel and Tye Wood finished 16th overall.

The event was hosted by the Florida Lake Canoe Club and signalled the end of the winter season. The paddlers, young and old, came out in numbers to prepare for the summer season.
The competition included a 6km race for the guppies – U8 to U12 paddlers – and a 10km race for the novice. The established canoeists took on each other in the longer 20km race.
“The weather was sunny but the wind was choppy with splashes and waves from time to time. However, the paddlers enjoyed their racing opportunity and the race attracted nearly 90 participants,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.
