Armed robbery sees three arrests follow

Swift action by a local security guard led to the arrests after a dramatic high-speed chase.

A quick reaction by a CMS Security guard led to the arrest of three alleged armed robbers on the corner of Main Road and Windermere Drive, Farrarmere, on October 15.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, the spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, just before 10:00, a resident on Wilge Street, Farrarmere, was confronted in her kitchen by two armed men demanding valuables.

“It is alleged that the third suspect was waiting outside the property in a getaway vehicle,” said Sekele.

“Upon hearing the ensuing commotion, the victim’s husband, who was in the bedroom, activated a panic button and then fled from the home undetected in an attempt to get help.”

The suspects apparently panicked and fled the scene in a grey Kia Picanto.

“A patrolling CMS Security reaction officer jumped into action and pursued the suspects. This led to a dramatic high-speed chase that ended abruptly when the suspects’ vehicle collided with oncoming vehicles and cars parked at a local eatery.”

The suspects were arrested with the assistance of an Ekurhuleni District Trio Operational Task Team member.

Information received from Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the spokesperson for the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), stated that three unlicenced firearms, registration plates, house burglary implements and the victim’s cellphone were found in the vehicle.

“Two 9mm pistols, a Taurus and a Z88, were recovered along with another Taurus with 18 rounds of ammunition,” said Giblin.

House burglary implements, three unlicensed firearms, registration plates and the Wilge Street victim’s phone were recovered.

“The second Taurus is equipped to shoot pepper balls and live ammunition.”

The suspects, aged between 26 and 38, were detained at the Benoni Police Station and face charges of house robbery, possession of house burglary implements, possession of stolen goods and possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition.

They appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on October 17.

“Investigations into this matter are continuing because it is suspected the trio might be linked to other cases,” said Sekele.
