Police units continue netting criminals

Investigations into all cases are continuing.

From November 3 to 9, the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) as well as Gauteng Rapid Response Services (RRS) closed the net on 98 criminals.

RRS members arrested suspects on charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, damage to property, attempted theft of motor vehicle, intimidation, theft, robbery, possession of suspected stolen goods and driving under the influence.

On November 10, BFS officers arrested a 49-year-old man after his vehicle collided with a stationary vehicle on the R562, Olifantsfontein.

He was arrested on charges of reckless and negligent driving as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

“During the blitz, RRS officers successfully recovered 37 hijacked and stolen vehicles, followed by eight accompanying arrests for being in possession of these vehicles,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, BFS and RRS spokesperson.

“Locally, BFS recovered three abandoned vehicles in Rabie Ridge, Third Avenue, Benoni and Ivory Park.”

During the same period 10 suspects were arrested for being in possession of unlicensed firearms; nine weapons were recovered.

“As we continue the fight against drug abuse 42 suspects were arrested across the province,” said Giblin.

“Heroin, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax and meth were some of the substances that were confiscated.”

The routine operations form part of the units’ efforts to stamp out crime and will be intensified throughout the festive season.
