Kickboxer named Gauteng sportsman of the year

He is a two-time WAKO African and WAKO world champion and has won championships in Africa and Europe.

Lakefield kickboxer Ahmed Mahomed was named the Gauteng sportsman of the year during the glitzy Gauteng Sports Awards ceremony at the Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng, near Randfontein, on November 18.

As one of the top kickboxers on the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) circuit, the youngster beat national archery champion Christian Beyers de Klerk and equestrian Jacques Horn to the gong.

Although he missed out on the popular sports personality of the year award, which went to wheelchair tennis ace Kgothatso Montjane, who won this year’s French Open and US Open doubles with partner Yui Kamiji, the martial artist had an incredible year inside the squared circle.

Trained by the South African Kickboxing Association (SAKA) president and WAKO African president, Aslam Mahomed, he is a two-time African and world champion, with wins around Europe and across Africa.

Ranked number one in his category in the world, Mahomed won three golds, three silvers and a bronze during the Flanders Cup in Belgium in September.

In October he won a gold, silver and two bronze medals in the Italian World Cup and Italian Open. He also won two golds, a silver and a bronze in the Turkey Open and added another two golds at the Hungarian Open in June.

The Benoni Muslim School learner won another two gold medals in the Clash of the Continents against Canada in Oudtshoorn in July.

Before his European dominance, the kickboxer won five gold medals in the SAKA national championships in Limpopo in April and was named fighter of the year.

His sister, Salaamah, missed out on the sportswoman of the year award which went to the 400m and 4x400m African champion and Commonwealth bronze medallist in the 400m, Zeney van der Walt.
