Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora’s Garden of Life still going strong
The Garden of Life is situated at the property of iKhaya da Luz Children’s Home.
More than 500 people are continuing to benefit from the fruitful harvest of the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora’s Garden of Life.
The garden, which has been in existence for the past three years, has become a lifeline for charity homes such as IKhaya da Luz, Sinethemba Hope House, House Thandi, Urban Ruins, Pauline Davis Court and Deneys Conradie, Angel Wings, Daveyton Soup Centre and various other local charities who receive fresh vegetables every second week of every month.
According to Benoni Aurora’s environmental chairperson, Charles van Rooyen, the aim of the garden is to alleviate the effects of poverty and hunger in various communities in Benoni.
“Rotary saw a need for the supply of vegetables to underprivileged communities in our area, and so the idea of supplying fresh vegetables began. In 2020, Rotary requested financial assistance from Rotary District 9400 in South Africa to build a vegetable tunnel and this was approved,” said Van Rooyen.
The club then reached an agreement with the owner of IKhaya da Luz to use part of their land to build a vegetable tunnel and in five months, the first vegetables were ready for harvesting and were distributed to various charities.
