Scouts share in family adventure
The troop from Kwa-Thema enjoyed the two-day camp with their families.
Arrowe Park Scout Centre, Lakefield, was a hive of activity between December 15 and 17 when Scouts embarked on their first annual closing camp.
Members of the Unified Scout Group, Kwa-Thema, showed their parents and siblings the ropes during the camp, which marked the end of another successful year and allowed the families to experience the fundamentals of scouting.
The troop, comprising Meerkats (aged five and six), Cubs (seven to 10 years) and Scouts (11 to 17), spent the weekend sleeping under the stars while engaging their families in various activities.
“Celebrating the last night of a successful adventure, families gathered to enjoy a relaxing campfire,” said Tebogo Rakgabyane, a group leader.
However, work still needed to be done throughout the weekend, with six Cubs completing their family camping badges and two others attaining their athlete badges.
“We were proud to fully invest a new Cub into the troop,” Rakgabyane said.
“Throughout the weekend, our Scouts completed their traveller advancement, camping and observation scout-craft badges.”
During the camp’s closing ceremony, Thokozani Mkhatshwo, the group’s troop Scouter, completed the final requirement for his movement bar, which required him to take the lead in running the event.
Fumani Mahlangu, an assistant troop Scouter, also attained his last three awards, which included Scouter training, projects and community service.
“He further received his movement, community and leadership bars, thus qualifying to receive his personal bar, one of the top awards within the Rover Scout programme,” said Mkhatshwo.
