Suspect (56) survives suicide attempt after allegedly murdering four family members

The Benoni City Times was on the scene at the couple’s home in Fairleads, Benoni, yesterday just before 19:00, where two women were shot dead.

A 56-year-old man is in hospital under police guard after allegedly shooting his elderly parents, wife, daughter and domestic worker just after midday on January 22.

According to SAPS provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the parents, aged 72 and 75, arrived at their Bredell, Kempton Park, home at about 11:30.

Their son, the suspect, was at the home when they arrived.

“It is alleged he fatally shot his parents. The suspect then went to a home in Fairleads just after midday, where he allegedly shot his wife (43), daughter (22) and domestic worker (56) before turning the gun on himself.”

Masondo said the domestic worker and daughter were certified dead on the scene, while the wife was airlifted to hospital.

The police confirmed on January 23 that the suspect survived the suicide attempt and that he and his wife were in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police are investigating four cases of murder and two cases of attempted murder. They could not confirm the motive for the shootings.
