Nkosi attains nine distinctions
“I am committed to pursuing this path and making a positive impact in the field of orthopaedics.”

Despite all the challenges he faced last year in matric, Mkhulu Nkosi said he anticipated he would attain distinctions in all his subjects.
A basketball player, Nkosi fractured his fibula while shooting hoops in 2022. This restricted his mobility so much that his friends had to carry him around the school premises.
It proved to be a blessing in disguise because it meant he could now dedicate more time to his books.
“I had anticipated passing all my subjects with distinctions because of the hours I burnt towards understanding my work,” he said.
The 18-year-old from Daveyton was one of the Turffontein-based Horizon International High School’s top-performing matriculants from the class of 2023 with nine distinctions.
He attained distinctions in English, Afrikaans, life orientation, physical science, mathematics, accounting, life sciences, religious studies and advanced programme in maths.
“The academic year was really challenging. However, we prepared for it long in advance. My parents and teachers exposed me to practising Grade 12 exams when I was in Grade 10. It helped me familiarise myself with the content I needed to understand.”
He explained he wouldn’t have achieved this if it were not for his parents, teachers and friends, who, he said, encouraged him to work hard consistently.
He lauded his parents for inculcating a “culture of excellence” in him from a young age, adding that his mechanical engineer father trained and pushed him to apply what he learnt at school in real-life situations.
“When I understood the application of the concepts we were learning about, it became more fascinating to learn new concepts. It was also coupled with studying hard to understand the various forms the exam questions might take.”
The learner said he would pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) at the University of Witwatersrand, adding that the human anatomy has always fascinated him.
“My desire to study medicine is driven by a combination of fascination with the musculoskeletal system, a strong desire to alleviate and restore normal body function, and a penchant for problem-solving and the personal fulfilment I derive from helping others.
“I am committed to pursuing this path and making a positive impact in the field of orthopaedics,” said Nkosi.
