BAC runners add glow to Johnson Crane Marathon

The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) runners capped-off a good weekend for the club with a strong performance at the Johnson Crane Hire Marathon on January 28.

With the conditions perfect for running, it was hard to miss the glowing blue and white colours of the club as the athletes streamed through the home straight in style to complete their races.

Jabulani Gamede, Josias Makoro and Erica Oaker, as well as Mohammed Abdull and Rita van Wyk, were the best performers after achieving podium places in their events and categories.

Gamede clocked 01:25:50 to finish third in the grandmasters (60-69) category in the men’s 21.1km. He finished the first 10km in 49:16 and ran the last half of the race in 42:34 at 03:53mins/km for the bronze.

Oaker claimed the silver in 70+ category in the women’s half-marathon after completing the race in 02:35:46, 02:10 behind winner Moila Sata from Absa AC.

Van Wyk finished second the women’s grandmasters in 04:04:37 in the marathon and Makoro was the third grandmaster in the men’s race after crossing the line in 03:26:42.

Abdull finished in second place in the men’s 70+ category in the 10km race. He clocked 01:02:35.

Top 10 finishers

Susan Laybourn finished in fifth place in the women’s 21.1km in the masters category (50-59). She clocked an impressive 01:56:50 while Dieter Muller was ninth male master at the finish as he crossed the line in 01:33:53.

Joseph Morowane was seventh in the 42.2km grandmasters category, finishing the race in 02:42:21 and Joseph Khumalo completed the men’s 60-69 10km event in 55:58 to round-up the top 10.

Proud Chauke won the men’s marathon after cutting the tape in 02:26:20 and Cian Oldknow clinched the women’s race in a record-breaking time of 02:39:28.

Elroy Gelant (01:05:29) and Farida Zwane (01:20:23) won the men’s and women’s half-marathon and Gladwin Mzazi (30:31) and Lebo Phalula-Mzazi (33:37) won the 10km race.
