Flying squad crime round-up

Members of the South African Police Service Gauteng Water Policing and Diving Services recovered four bodies throughout the province.

Possession of drugs
Five men, aged between 32 and 47, were arrested at the Snake Road off-ramp on March 4. Officers were conducting routine operations along the N12 when they spotted a Hyundai Accent speeding past the Putfontein off-ramp.  Giving chase the officers were able to bring the vehicle to a stop and a thorough search of the vehicle was conducted. A plastic bag containing meth with an estimated value of R5 000 was discovered.

Suspected stolen copper
While patrolling Zuurfontein Road, Sebenza, on March 8, BFS members brought a white Toyota truck, transporting scrap tins to a stop. A thorough search of the vehicle and its cargo led to the discovery of five bags of suspected stolen copper. The 50-year-old driver was arrested and the 95kg of copper seized.

Attempted theft of motor vehicle.
A 24-year-old man was arrested on the corner of Mercury and Bayley streets on March 9 for attempted theft of a motor vehicle.

Recovered vehicles
• A white Nissan NP200 was found abandoned at a carwash in Madela Kufa informal settlement, Thembisa. It was reported as stolen in Boksburg North.
• A blue Hero motorbike was found in Bekker Street, Yeoville, after it was reported stolen in the same area.

Water police divers recoveries
• The body of a young boy was recovered by members of the South African Police Service Gauteng Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) in a water filled excavation site in Brackendowns on March 1.

• WPDS members responded to a call in Tsakane, on March 3. It was alleged that a group of boys were swimming in a dam when one of them disappeared under the water. The search was called off late in the afternoon but resumed at first light on March 4, with the assistance of the Johannesburg and K9 Search and Rescue Unit. His body was recovered later that afternoon.

• A severely decomposed body was recovered in Lombardy East on March 4.

• The body of a woman was recovered in the Natalspruit River, Katlehong, on March 6. The body was visible from the shore and was found to be stuck under rocks.
