Community reels with shock following the shooting of Unity Secondary School teacher
Social media has been abuzz with tributes since the news of his death broke on Friday evening.
Teachers and learners of Unity Secondary School in Daveyton are mourning the sudden death of Seraka Mogoswane, who was the department head of commerce at the school.
The 49-year-old teacher was shot and killed on the night of April 5 while inside his vehicle parked in Daveyton.
According to Daveyton SAPS spokesperson Constable Ntando Ngomane, at around 21:35 the SAPS Client Service Center received a complaint of a shooting at the corner of Gumbi and Eiselen Street.
“When police arrived at the scene they found a driver inside a red Chevrolet Cruze with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. The victim was certified dead on the scene by paramedics,” said Ngomane.
Unity Secondary School posted on its Facebook that Mogoswane played an enormous role in the teaching of Business Studies and heading the commerce department.
“His true definition of education was accentuated through his dedication and philosophical definition of what it is to be an educator with par excellence in the South African context. He will forever be missed for his smile, love for sports and fighting for educators’ rights,” said the school.
The Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said they are deeply concerned at the onslaught of educators following the deaths of two educators which occurred on the same day and involved shootings.
“We extend our sincerest condolences to their respective families and school communities. We plead with law enforcement agencies to bring the culprits of these senseless killings to book,” said Chiloane.
A Riverside High School educator was fatally shot on April 5 while driving to work in the morning by an unknown assailant at a traffic light near the North West University’s Vaal Campus.
The department said it will deploy a Psycho-Social Support Unit to both schools on April 8 to provide necessary counselling and trauma support to learners and teachers.
Mogoswane’s memorial will be held at Unity Secondary School on April 9 from noon to 15:00.
