Benoni hammer ERU to clinch plate cup
They scored nine tries to beat East Rand United 55-22.

The Benoni Northerns Rugby Club delivered on their commitment to silverware after promising their fans they will be unstoppable in the Valke President’s Cup plate final against East Rand United (ERU) on April 27.
Unstoppable they were, as they hammered the Reiger-Park outfit 55-22 to walk away with their first silverware of the season in a dominant display in Vereeniging.
They were at their absolute best, running in nine tries, with Werner Els grabbing a hat-trick. They added 10 more points with the boot as they beat a hapless ERU that only showed signs of life late in the match.

Benoni raced into a 55-3 lead, thanks to tries from Lex Laurens, Els (3), Justin Howell, Khotso Mofutsana, Bongile Matiwane, Marco Swart and Jean dre Duvenhage.
United helped themselves to three tries late in the game but it was too little too late as the Benonians reaped the rewards for their hard work early in the match.
The second team set the tone for their seniors early on the day with a one-sided 61-0 victory over the ERU, which was stopped 10 minutes into the second half due to the Benonians’ dominance.

Benoni’s other tries were scored by Johann Grobler, Joshua Bouwer, Christiaan Willemse, Lucean Bester, Sheldon Botha, Bruce Roets and Stephen Pretorious.
Bradin Anderson was accurate with the boot, scoring seven conversions while Riek Myburgh added a single two-pointer.

The club’s deputy chairperson, Jaco Havenga, thanked the players for their hard work and fighting for the badge, adding he was proud of the team.
“When the whistle blew, I had goosebumps all over my body. I’m proud of the boys. It was great seeing our captain Dorian receive the cup from the Valke President Jan Wiegardt,” said Havenga.
The team kicks off its Valke Merlin League campaign away to Nigel on May 4. They will then travel to Elsburg on May 11.
