Nurses are the lifeblood of community building

“Nurses are skilled and trained healthcare professionals who blend the science and art of nursing with passion to care for the sick and the vulnerable.”

“Nursing is our passion, and therefore, our lifestyle.”

This was the sentiment of the nursing staff of Life The Glynnwood and Glynnview Hospitals as they filed into the hall to commemorate International Nurses Day, today (May 12).

Management of the hospital celebrated the healthcare professionals, who they describe as the heartbeat of the community, sacrificing daily to care for those in need.

Taking the podium on May 10, hospital manager Hendrik Swartz said nurses day is one of the most important days on the calendar because it allows management to celebrate nurses and their incredible commitment to excellence in patient care.

David Price, Life’s chief information officer.

“Nurses not only work hard to provide quality care; they heal the body, mind and soul of our patients through compassion,” he said.

“If you do the math, for 25 years, each nurse would have roughly tended to 9 330 patients and indirectly impacted the lives of 40 000 families.

“Every day you are making a difference in someone’s life.”

David Price, Life’s chief information officer, further lauded the tireless efforts of nurses and added the company aimed to place technological innovations in the hands of medical professionals.

“You are the pillars of our organisation, and we strive to create advancements that will streamline your administrative responsibilities, thus creating an environment where you can dedicate more time to your patients,” said Price.

Observing her last nurses day before retiring in December, Sr Marilyn de Meyer, theatre manager, said a nurse will forever be a nurse.

“I graduated 43 years ago and have been part of the Life team for more than three decades. Being of service is ingrained in your soul,” she said.

“Let your heart forever be your guide.”

Recognising the efforts and unwavering dedication, local nurses received awards as part of Life Healthcare’s Great 100 Nurses.

Nurses who will hang up their epaulettes are Sr Marilyn de Meyer (theatre manager), Sr Chrismar Hattingh (quality manager) and Anna-Marie Neetling (unit manager).

Members, nominated by their peers based on their dedication and leadership skills, received awards.

“You are laying the foundations for those who will follow your footsteps,” said Sr Sophie Sibisi.

“Lead with courage and bravery. We thank you for the pride you take in your work and how you help those in need.”

Following the formalities, nurses in attendance were treated to tasty eats while enjoying foot, hand, and neck massages.
