Sensei Barnett elated after students perform well at regionals

The students won 33 medals

The chief instructor of New World Shotokan (NWS) karate, sensei John Barnett, is elated after his Benoni dojo students won 33 medals at the NWS’ annual regional championships at Impala Park Hall on April 13.

Barnett expressed his delight after seeing the level of competition in the tournament, saying, “It was wonderful to see the standard and spirit of all the karatekas.”

The tournament, held annually in April, pitted karatekas from dojos in Benoni, Boksburg and Kempton Park, and Witbank, Sabie, Hazyview, Nelspruit and Hazyview.

“It’s a great achievement for these karatekas to step out of their own dojos and compete against others from other dojos. For some, it was their first championships and a scary environment for them,” said Barnett.

The central region – Benoni, Boksburg, Kempton Park, Vereeniging and Witbank – won the best region trophy.

The eighth dan thanked his fellow instructors, senseis Janien Potgieter (sixth dan) and Chris Martin (fourth dan), saying he was proud of them.
