Inmates go from imprisoned to empowered

The inmates were reminded that freedom came through the blood and sweat of struggle heroes and heroines.

With the national and provincial elections on May 29, Modderbee Correctional Centre commemorated 30 years of democracy, partnerships and growth on May 8.

Inmates and staff reflected on the progress of democracy, which transformed historically repressive prisons into human rights-based centres for offender rehabilitation.

Various speakers from the Benoni SAPS, the Department of Arts and Culture and other organisations encouraged inmates to improve and change their lives.

They were also reminded that freedom came through the blood and sweat of struggle heroes and heroines.
