Ticket bought at local shop wins Benoni man R70m

The unknown Benoni resident who has since claimed his prize said he plans to erect tombstones for his parents.

Plus Benoni Mexican staff have expressed excitement that one of their customers won the R70m Lotto Powerball jackpot after buying the winning ticket at the store three weeks ago.

Ithuba National Lottery confirmed that the winner of the May 31 draw spent R15 on a quick pick selection.

The Benoni resident, whose name was not disclosed to the Benoni City Times, was unaware of his windfall until days after the draw.

In a statement issued by Ithuba, the winner shared his disbelief, saying, “I took the results slip at the store a few days after the draw and put it with all my other slips. Two days later, I checked the ticket and results and was shocked to realise I had been sitting on a ticket worth R70m. It felt like a dream.

Hiding his face to protect his identity, a Benoni man won the R70m Powerball jackpot.

“It was only after Ithuba confirmed I indeed held the winning ticket that I believed it.”

He shared that he plans to honour his late parents by erecting tombstones for them.

“My parents passed away a few years ago. It caused me a lot of pain because I couldn’t afford tombstones for them. Now, as I am able to fulfil this wish, I feel a sense of closure and hope that it will invite more blessings into my life.”

The winner expressed a desire to handle his newfound wealth with care, planning to carefully consider his financial decisions with the guidance of Ithuba’s expert financial advice.

The manager of Plus Benoni Mexican cafe, Délio de Jesus, said they are overwhelmed with excitement to learn that their store sold the winning ticket.

Staff said they have also had other winners out of their store.

“I guess our store is full of luck. Our customers prefer to buy here rather than at other outlets because they always win when they buy here.”

Plus Benoni Mexican staff are thrilled to have sold the winning lottery ticket to a Benoni resident who has since claimed his prize.

According to Ithuba, in the same draw, another player won the PowerBall Plus jackpot, bagging R3 095 642.20.

The winner plans to buy a home for her family.

Ithuba CEO Charmaine Mabuza congratulated both winners, saying, “I have no doubt their windfall will transform their lives significantly.”
