Mother-daughter duo inspires community to stay fit

“Fitness isn't just about muscles and body goals, it's about enhancing your quality of life. It ensures that our elders remain active and engaged longer.”

Sinqobile Dlamini, known as ‘King Q’, and her daughter, Amahle Mangena, are not just family but also partners in promoting physical and mental well-being through their fitness group, the ‘King Qz Lounge’ based in Etwatwa.

Professionally trained as a computer specialist, Dlamini found her true calling in fitness in around 2022 after experiencing postnatal depression after the birth of her daughter.

“I struggled with low self-esteem due to how I looked. Fitness became my safe space, not just for physical benefits but for my mental health as well,” she shared.

Sinqobile started her training at a local park with young people but after few months the group evolved into a full-fledged community initiative that even welcomed the elderly.

“Seeing young people hooked on drugs pained me so I decided to introduce fitness activities to keep them busy. Central to my approach is meditation, which I introduced to help calm nerves, especially during stressful times, like exams.

“I’ve received positive feedback from parents.”

Dlamini said meditation is a cost-effective alternative to professional therapy.

The 33-year-old then decided to rope her 13-year-old daughter into getting fit to promote physical and emotional well-being from a young age.

“Fitness isn’t just about muscles and body goals, it’s about enhancing your quality of life. It ensures that our elders remain active and engaged longer.”

Dlamini said she dreams of expanding their operation to a fully equipped fitness studio.

She advises parents to strengthen their relationships with their children to prevent their kids from the distractions of social media.
