Residents in some parts of Daveyton are highly frustrated with the prolonged water outage, which hit the area a week ago (July 26).

They claim there are not enough water tankers being provided by the council and when a tanker is eventually dispatched this is during the day when many people are at work.

The Benoni City Times reported a few days ago on the City of Ekurhuleni warning it could take up to two weeks before the reservoir systems supplying the area fully recovers following Rand Water’s maintenance project.

Residents said in some parts of the township the water is slowly starting to a trickle. However, in other parts taps remain bone dry.

Chaotic scenes of people carrying buckets in search of water have been seen in Etwatwa and Daveyton since July 27. One resident likened the queues for water to something similar to the voting queues.

Desperate times have even seen some resort to collecting effluent water from ERWAT’s Daveyton water care works for domestic use.

Wanda Annandale, ERWAT manager of communications, marketing and stakeholder engagement, issued an urgent warning against this.

“We have engaged with employees and security personnel stationed at the facility to discourage collection of this water but the situation has gone beyond our control,” she said.

“Use of effluent water can be harmful. It is not for consumption or any form of domestic use.”

The City Times awaits comment from the metro about the issue of water tankers.
